Crafter's call
Jun. 2nd, 2009 08:26 amIf you're a crocheter, knitter, or sewer and have some extra love to give, (or if you're none of the above but local and want to learn, I'll help), join me in sending a few handmade items to homeless LGBT/queer teenagers in New York. It's summer now, but come winter, things get cold again -- we can whip up a few items to send to Sylvia's Place.
With Ellie's recent demise, I am sitting on a motherload of yarn. If some of it goes to projects for teens that need it, I think Ellie would be happy, and um, if any local friends want to help me use it up, I'd be really happy.
The shelter's mailing address:
Homeless Youth Services
c/o MCCNY
446 W. 36th St.
(between 9th & 10th Ave.)
New York, NY
10018
The Ravelry thread, in case you'd like to post and contribute.
KNIT/CROCHETED/SEWN STUFF:
Sweaters
Hats
Scarves/Shawls/Shrugs
Mittens
Gloves/Fingerless Gloves
Legwarmers
Socks
Slippers
Blankets/Afghans
Pillows/Throw Pillows/Pillowcases
Washcloths/Dishcloths/Dish Towels
Bags (Market bags/Handbags/Tote bags)
Machine wash is preferred but not required. It would be helpful to include a tag with laundering instructions on it attached to the item. To read the email from the shelter contact, go to post # 67 here.
If you wish, or are unable to make handcrafted items, feel free to also send:
OTHER STUFF:
Books (appropriate for teens/adults)
Paper goods/school or office supply items
Postage stamps
Games (again, for teens)
Nonperishable food
Toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, soap, razors, shaving cream, pads and tampons, and deodorant, as per Frances)
Underwear (both male and female) – teen/adult sizes
“Practical” socks (white cotton six-pack style) – teen/adult sizes
