Difficult Conversations is an amazing book on how to have hard conversations. It taught me a lot about how I get in my own way sometimes, and about some of my assumptions.

All I gotta say is: I GOT A COPY OF HARRY POTTER. And I'm reading it.

1) Total number of books owned: about 600 or so, judging by the bookshelves. Mostly fantasy; some poetry and cookbooks and young adult fiction, too.

2) The last book I bought:

The Stardancers, by Spider and Jeanne Robinson, at a used bookstore, since it's such a very excellent book.

3) The last book I read:

Girls in Pants, by Ann Brashares. It's a beautiful book, and made me think about when I was going away to college, and how good friends are to each other. Like its prequel, _Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants_, the story is about love and the bravery it takes to really embrace love. The love of friends for each other - that's straightforward enough, although it'll be tested. The love for yourself, to decide that you want to go to Art school over your parents' wishes; the love for your family, when you fear what going away means; those were harder loves. I liked the book a lot, needless to say.

4) Five books that mean a lot to me:

Book that my high school English teacher gave me, on graduating: his book of poems, to "Kimberly, writer in the making"
Book that I loved as a kid: Heroes and Gods of Greek mythology
Book I bonded with Jess over, long ago: Arrows of the Queen, by Mercedes Lackey, and the other 2 in the trilogy.
Books that I've loved lately: Animal Dreams, by Barbara Kingsolver, and Sunshine, by Robin McKinley. (Matt was reading me Sunshine a few days ago, actually)
Book that was somewhat worldshaking: The Cloister Walk, by Kathleen Norris
Book that I cried over recently: Night, by Elie Wiesel

Okay, I cheated.

Oh, stupid memes :P This is strictly OPTIONAL, people, if you're reading.

I'm only halfway through this book, on the self-preservation measures that instinct provides, and I have to say it's quite brilliant. It breaks down the warning signals that our instincts do for us naturally (like, when someone deliberately ignores our "no," uses forced teaming -- "we" -- or uses too much detail in his or her lies, or is just generally too glib...) and I think it could actually save someone's life.

That's not to say that I shouldn't go back to my high school days and try to figure out judo or something, because a martial art is another useful skill. But good stuff.

list of the top 110 banned books (of all time). bold the ones you've read. italicize the ones you've read part of. underline the ones you specifically want to read (at least some of). read more. convince others to read some.

banned books meme )

... sadly, at the end of that list, I realize that not only am I not all that well read, but that I don't want to be, either :P I mean, I want to read 7 more books on that list. Alas.

I wonder why they didn't ban the Marquis De Sade's work.

Never underestimate the power of random ex-boyfriends who might still be reading your journal, even if they were blocked from commenting.

So, courtesy of Daniel, here's the list again, alphabetized by authors' first names, but without my bolding/italicizing.

take me away! )

I suppose I should reconsider whether I'm actually still annoyed with him.

(edited to add, 1 day later: not actively furious, but still don't trust him or want him in my life.)

Memage! Books... (courtesy of Miss Emily [ profile] amocantare)

*bold those you've read
*italicise started-but-never-finished
*add one of your own
*post to your livejournal

I should really read some of these. I wish they were in alphabetical order...

read on! )
