... Things that are silly include me. I mean, normal people, when they get an email from a family friend saying "I'd like to hire you for a massage," don't panic. I got training for this. I'm competent. But I'm nervous anyway. I need to find one of those hourly rental places -- the places that charge you $25 an hour, so that you can give a massage in a decent space that isn't your own apartment (which is a mess, and is always crowded). I need to come up with business cards.

And Neil is gone for a conference, and somehow that not only makes me sad, but more panicky.

I'd think giving massages to someone you know would be far MORE intimidating, actually.

I don't remember my mom ever dealing with hourly rental places - she had her own table so usually she either took it with her to peoples' houses or set aside a space in our house that was specifically for massage. Good luck with business cards and the whole deal!

I agree on both counts. In the long term, you'll need to buy a massage table/chair that you can set up somewhere at your place or take with you, but a rental place might be a lower stress way to deal with this first one, since things aren't set up yet.

I have a massage table -- and I could even take it with me, actually, although it could be lighter, and I should probably buy one of the wheeling thingies for it -- but finding a space that's appropriate is a problem. There's no space in our apartment. I could go to other people's apartments, though -- I'd have to charge more, which I still feel weird about doing... ugh.

Making house calls might be a good way to deal with it until you have a regular space available. $1/min is not terribly expensive in your business -- you might normally want to be a bit cheaper than the competition when you're new to it, but making house calls could more than make up for that because there's travel time/costs involved.

A lot of "adult" things can be very intimidating when you do them for the first time, as simple as they may seem on paper.
