I got my annual reminder that hot things are bad to pick up with bare hands today, scalding my fingers against a pot-side. I'm very blase about it, because in previous years, I've picked up a heated beaker, when I'd just turned off the Bunsen burner beneath it, wanted to taste some soup and stuck my fingers in, used a dish towel instead of a proper oven mitt to pull out cookies... and each time, I had irritating first and second degree burns, ugly white blisters, and cursed quite creatively with tears in my eyes. (Yes, I run the offended part in question under cold water.)

This year, Matt reminded me that if I stuck ice in a cloth towel, I could ice it. That made me happy. And then I remembered an athletic friend of mine talking about liquid bandages, like New Skin, and how it was better for your scrapes than just gauze. So I hied to the first aid section of the drugstore, hastily bought & applied the stuff outside the store, and discovered: dude. There's some painkiller in this stuff so it doesn't sting anymore. Walked around, bought my groceries, washed dishes (unthinkable with a regular bandage), and typed this. Without pain. Wow. I'm waiting to see if it peels off in a less painful manner than regular bandages, but just the fact that it stays in one place (no annoying maneuvering in order to get a regular bandage to stay still on a fingertip!) and doesn't feel gross gets my vote.
