Hmmm. (says Kim, having played hooky from school today because throat was unbearable...)

To you wedded people, what was the verdict on changing dresses between ceremony and reception? Gianna? Dan?

On the one hand, if I change into another dress between ceremony and reception, people (mostly me...) don't get to admire the pretty white dress very long. Also, changing in and out of the damn thing will likely be a pain in the tookus, and I'll have to change twice -- once out of it into another dress, and once out of that other dress back into a bridal gown for pictures after the reception. And I'll have to, y'know, actually find another dress.

Hang on a sec -- before I go on to the next point, if I didn't tell the bridal party -- pictures are after the reception, to get the best of the 5 PM summer light.

Okay, back to our story.

On the other hand, if I don't change dresses, there is the possibility of Kim spilling food on the white dress, which would definitely be bad for pictures, (although that would be amusing for the course of the reception) and there is also the fact that during the reception, I want to be able to move and breathe more freely than I think I'll be able to in a bridal gown.

Dilemmas. What would you do?

Carolyn didn't end up changing dresses--though for a while she wanted to change into a little, white swing-dress. It worked out fine in the end. At our wedding, we spent more time circulating than eating.

Me, I'd probably try to sneak pictures in before the reception to avoid the issue. But if your heart is set on 5pm sun, then you have to decide a) How likely is it that you will get food on your dress (which may depend on how much time you have to actually eat vs. circulate), and b) How much it would make you unhappy if your dress had food on it before the pictures. Basically, (a) is a multiplier ranging from one-tenth to one, but if (b) is astronomically high, you should change dresses. And if (b) is really low, you shouldn't bother. Naturally, (b) is somewhere in the middle, so you'll have to decide for yourself.

eh. I didn't change, and I wouldn't bother. I did only drink white whine, b/c I was paranoid about spilling red on the dress, but food wasn't a problem (i just ate over the plate) and I picked a dress that I could dance and move around in - that was really important to me too, so I made sure the dress did what I wanted it to and that I didn't feel trapped in it. Too much of a pain in the ass to change anyway.

Thanks, G :) Hrm. Mayhaps it's time to pick a different dress...

most people i know have not changed dresses.

then again, if it were me, i would almost certainly make a mess out of the dress during the reception...

This is a memory from over 30 years, a different world, I guess.

Any formal pictures were before the ceremony, which obviated the spillage problem. They were also taken by a friend, not a professional photographer.

Paula wore a Mexican muslin dress, not anything like a traditional American wedding dress, and I'm sure much more comfortable. We had a great time, with very little pretension.

Thanks, J -- I haven't forgotten you, either, it's just that most of my 'net time seems to come from either stolen time (late at night or hooky from school)...

I know the pretension thing makes little sense, but part of it is for family, and the other part for the dream of that fairy-taleishness. I've already had my great guy, alone, for my own part.

As for professional photography -- I like my photog lots! He's unpretentious, and I care enough about photography that it's important to have good shots.

I plan on changing dresses too. My plan is to wait a while into the reception, so everyone gets to see the dress upclose and then change into something else to party in.
