So, though I had a lovely time this weekend visiting Simon and his beautiful wife Ann (and photos shall arrive sometime soonish), and I enjoyed seeing Josh/Shelley for the brief time I saw them, I would like to say this: I always forget how much I hate traveling on buses.

Buses make me irritable, bus sick, pissed off at people who don't know how to modulate their voices, utterly disgusted at the halitosis of neighbors who've never heard of breath mints, desperately wishful of a reality where I didn't know how to speak Chinese on the Chinatown bus, and generally... ready to go kill someone.

I brought knitting needles with me. There was some asshole on the subway ride home who was busking was singing off key, and he has NO IDEA how lucky he was that I didn't try to stick the fucking needles through his fucking eyes.

I would like to announce this for future reference: next time I go travel to see someone, it will be when I have more money, and I'll fly or take a train. No more buses EVER AGAIN. EVER.

Yeah, buses are definitely not too fun. Even with such delightful destinations as Josh and Shelley and others. That's why I like hosting travelling friends so much. :)

It was good to see you too. Buses require discipline and patience. :)

It was great to see you again, albeit briefly.

That's why I've never taken the Chinatown bus.

Even when I'm slumming it, I take the Greyhound. It's more expensive but but it does attract a better class of person, he says classistly and unapologetically.

For the best in comfort, take the Acela. For speed, you should fly.

If time and comfort is no object, there is a cheaper and slower alternative to the Chinatown bus. I understand that Mohegan Sun, the casino in Connecticut, has free shuttle buses from Boston and New York City. So you could take the free shuttle from New York City to the casino and then take the free shuttle from the casino to Boston. Overall cost: $0.

In any case, it was great to meet you in person for the first time. If you fancy house-sitting for us in July, you would have complimentary accomodation for two weeks in Boston. We'll even give our t-pass so you can take the T for free!

Greyhound's New York specials are only about $5 more and they're a lot better. I can generally tolerate the Chinatown bus, but it's a precarious tolerance...

Oh, come on, would we have had the opportunity to make up those songs on a greyhound bus?

That's true. Demure middle-aged couples don't inspire such...art.

(Kim, in case you're confused, we were two rows behind a VERY amorous couple. The product of our having to see them for the entire ride was a song to the tune of "She'll be Coming 'Round The Mountain," with the immortal lyrics of "Won't you please make whoopee somewhere else?")

*hugs*

If you do have to travel by bus again, I'll be there to hug you through it.

Hi Neil:

Since Kim was such a cool house-guest and since she speaks highly of you, you have an invitation to crash together at our place in Somerville whenever you next decide to visit Boston.

You're quite welcome.

Here's another great picture that Kim took - this one of me and Ann.

you have to find a way to make all of those things amusing... like having temper tantrums.
