Thoughts on getting my own domain and space -- it occurs to me that I could have asked any number of friends for space on their domains, over the years.
I could have asked for space from: Karel, on
greyduck.net, Janet, on
ragingwomen.org, Stacy, on
covehurst.net, or Dave, on bantha.org (although bantha is run out of Dave's ISDN line, so I feel guilty asking for more from him than he already gives me with my bantha account). In the past, I
have hosted on
WSO, the Williams student server. And, final option, I could have asked Matt T. to set up space for me on his server, and hosted my own domain out of there.
But no -- I don't want to be indebted to another friend for my webspace, because, as experience reveals, if you decide to stop speaking to a friend, then you'll forever feel uncomfortable going to them as an admin. (Although, for the record, Daniel is capable and trustworthy as a sysadmin; he's thorough, generous about space, reports errors, and gets back to you quickly. No complaints -- this is just my personal uncomfortableness speaking, and also the fact that I've wanted my own domain for a while.)
I'm going through Karawynn's
Viridian City Media for hosting. Possibilities for names:
nerdwhore.org (thought from Suz)
irrationalist.net (thought from Kelli)
kimmiebabble.net
Any other ideas, I'd love to hear :)
On a slightly hypocritical note, I'm happy to share the space I get -- so (provided you trust me), Seth, you can host risingpun.com with me, and Rachelle and Suz and anyone else is welcome to have space on whatever domain I eventually decide on.
