Bad habits
Dec. 27th, 2006 05:54 pmI have this terrible habit of staring at people in the gym when I know they're doing exercises wrong. Neil says that this is actually encouraging bad habits on the part of the men I'm staring at (usually, these people are men -- busting their butts to do exercises the wrong way multiple times). Apparently, men probably assume that I'm staring at their physique, rather than at their sloppy form. So I'm going to try to curb my staring, and vent here instead.
1) If you lift the weights and then *drop* them rapidly, you're not only not eccentrically contracting the muscle the way you should be, but you're likely to hurt yourself.
2) 2 rapid reps on every machine is a good way to train... not much in particular.
3) Why do none of you people ever stretch or cool down afterwards? Not cooling down means that you have dilated blood vessels without muscles pumping blood back to the heart, which in turn means that your brain and the rest of your body don't have blood for a bit.
4) You do latissimus pulldowns, not pushdowns. I guess you might be working your triceps, though.
5) Lift weights you can actually lift.
6) Treadmills will impact your knees just as running will; warm up beforehand if you have to use them.
